The Instituto Pantanal Sul participates in the 5th South American Agroecology Seminar.

From December 4th to 6th, 2024, in Campo Grande, capital of Mato Grosso do Sul, the 5th South American Agroecology Seminar, AGROECOL 2024, was held.

In conjunction with the event, the 1st Extractivist Meeting of Mato Grosso do Sul was held ; the 4th Seminar on Agroforestry Systems on Agroecological Bases of Mato Grosso do Sul; the 7th Meeting of Agroecological Producers of Mato Grosso do Sul; the 8th State Seminar on Rural Education of MS and the 9th Agroecology Seminar of Mato Grosso do Sul .


AGROECOL 2024 reached 519 registrants, of which 188 were men, 324 women and 7 declared themselves as others. The academic community of the Federal University of Mato Grosso do Sul, residents of the capital and other municipalities, members of settlements, quilombola and indigenous communities, local and international researchers and those interested in the topic of agroecology were present.


For the opening ceremony, the Brazilian national anthem was sung in the Terena language, by Dinny Terena, moving everyone present.

The Agroecological and Sociobiodiversity Products Fair also took place, with 81 exhibitors from Campo Grande and inland municipalities. Indigenous peoples from the Guató, Kinikinau, Terena, Guarani, Atikun and Guarani Kaiowá ethnic groups participated. Agroextractivist products such as jatobá and bocaiúva flours, jams made from native fruits, liqueurs, seeds, nuts, honey, breads, artisanal cakes and much more, as well as indigenous crafts and arts, were on display.

At the end of each day of the event, cultural activities took place in the spaces of the Federal University of Mato Grosso do Sul with presentations by the LIVRES Project with the Batuque Canta group, Dinny Terena, Coletivo Maracangalha, Ana Cabral, Gabriel Chiad, the Umojá Project and also the first indigenous Guarani-Kaiowá rapper, MC Anarandá.

There were several presentation tables and workshops on agroecology and products derived from agroextractivism, such as: " Development and Sustainability Perspectives for Women Farmers - promoting women's economic empowerment", "Production Chain of Medicinal Plants and Phytoproducts - networks of local phytoproducts and biodiversity" and "Carbon Credit in Family Farming/Agroforestry MS - high species diversity restores the environment and its ecosystem services" and many others.

Among the tables, the first meeting of extractivists from Mato Grosso do Sul took place, with speakers Nathália Carelli and Wagner dos Santos, from the Instituto Pantanal Sul, who met with other extractivists present to prepare a document with several proposals on the theme of extractivism, such as the strengthening of Agroecology and Extractivism in family farming, indigenous peoples, traditional communities, urban and peri-urban agriculture and the recognition and understanding of the transformative potential of Agroecology and Extractivism for changing the development paradigm capable of building biodiverse agriculture, resilient to climate change.

The Instituto Pantanal Sul, in addition to participating in the table mentioned above, also participated in table 5 "Agroextractivism and Sustainability" and contributed to the organization and logistics of the event.


AGROECOL takes place every two years , strengthening educational strategies in agroecology and extractive techniques at all levels, as well as scientific and technological production and the respective means of dissemination, to strengthen the dialogue with the set of knowledge necessary for the construction of agroecological and extractive knowledge together with the formation of a critical mass capable of facing the challenges of the future.
